LG’s Touch Screen Phone Model KF-700

LG

Korean mobile phone maker, LG Electronics, unveiled its latest mobile phone, KF-700 at the Mobile World Congress trade show lately. The latest slim, stylish design and slider type phone, LG-KF700 features multiple input methods. It has a large, high resolution, 3-inch-touch screen for immediate touch screen input. Users also can use keystroke saving shortcut dial and numeric keypad for input. The LG-KF700 also comes with powerful multimedia featured which includes a full web browser, digital audio and video players as well as handy widgets.

The world’s first phone with three separate input methods, the LG-KF700 itegrates a 3-inch touchscreen, alpha-numeric keypad and Shortcut Dial. Each of these input methods is assigned to the tasks at which it is most efficient, making LG’s highly intuitive interface possible. With its user-optimized navigation, all of the phone’s functions and features are instantly accessable.

“Our consumers told us that they wanted a phone that had plenty of multimedia features, but doesn’t take a long time fiddling with menus to figure out. We created the LG-KF700 based their insight,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Internal research showed that a phone’s multimedia features often lay dormant if they are hard to access. On many phones these features are hidden deep in menus, requiring too much time and effort to find them. The LG-KF700 eliminates these endless menus with its intuitive interface and multiple input methods.”

Update 1:

LG has officially launched the LG-KF700 22 April 2008

A new multimedia phone, the KF700 combines three input methods to create what the company says is “an amazingly intuitive user interface” with instant access to features.

The first phone to integrate three separate input methods, there’s a 3-inch touchscreen, alpha-numeric keypad and “Shortcut Dial”.

The LG-KF700 is available in black and silver versions, as well as a black version with chrome accents. Pricing is yet to be announced.

Gigaset concept phones by Siemens

OLED

Siemens has unveiled some concept phones – the Gigaset “Onyx” and “Helium”. Both phones have received Red-Dot-Design-Awards and support what Siemens says is “innovative, holistic high-tech communication.”

The Onyx concept is designed to support both the social and technical convergence in families and households. Each handset is assigned to a family member who in return is free to personalise the handset in terms of looks and applications using OLED technology.

The Gigaset Helium concept phone offers an integrated 3D-surround loudspeaker and stereo microphones, activated via sliding function, which should mean “revolutionary” speech quality and unprecedented freedom in conversation.

Touchpad sensor keys on the area-wide OLED-display offer plenty of space for intuitive and convenient handling.

Demonstrate prototype Google Android phone

Andriod

Google’s Android software platform for mobile phones is coming to life in Barcelona, with a number of chip manufacturers showing it running on prototype or proof-of-concept phones at the Mobile World Congress today.

Freescale, Marvell, NEC Electronics, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments all had Android on show. Most of them expect to see Android phones based on their chips on the market in the second half of this year.

The device will also allow for the integration of different applications, a capability mostly limited to desktop computers. For example, a real-estate agent could combine information from its database with mapping software to let customers easily locate properties on the go, TI said.

The hardware ranged from bulky development boards with daughter cards sticking out at unlikely angles to more compact devices small enough to slip into your pocket. All were built around chips containing processor cores designed by Arm, a British fabless semiconductor company.

Google had said on Friday that while a number of companies would demonstrate Android products at the wireless trade show, the prototypes would give no real indication of the actual devices customers would ultimately be able to buy.

LiMo’s Linux Phone Platform Nears Launch

Limo

The LiMo Foundation plans to release the first version of its Linux software platform for mobile phones in March, with handsets running the software due soon.

LiMo’s goal is to offer handset manufacturers an open, hardware-independent software platform that offers a secure environment for downloadable applications.

Publishing the code on time is one thing, but “putting handsets into consumers’ hands is the most important proof point,” said Morgan Gillis, executive director of the LiMo Foundation. That will happen very soon, he said.

On Monday, the Foundation will publish a beta version of the software’s APIs (application programming interfaces) so that developers can begin writing applications to run on it.

The APIs are still beta versions because the underlying software is not yet complete and minor details may change ahead of its release in March, Gillis said.

The LiMo Foundation is focusing on phones’ middleware, leaving handset manufacturers and operators to choose their own user interface and content applications.

That freedom is important, Gillis said, because “the cost of developing the first phone on a platform can be as high as half a billion dollars.”

Phone manufacturers may be unwilling to make that kind of commitment to a new operating system if it will also leave them tied to another company’s user interface or content applications, he said.

“That’s why Windows Mobile and Series 60 didn’t gain broad traction; suppliers didn’t feel comfortable,” he said.

LiMo faces competition from another open platform, Android, supported by Google and the Open Handset Alliance.

For Gillis, the connection between Android and Google’s content make that another example of a tied operating system.

Although the LiMo Foundation’s code is not quite finished, most of it has already been proven in handsets sold or distributed by founder members Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic, Samsung Electronics and Vodafone, Gillis said.

Nevertheless, there are some new elements, notably the security model, Gillis said. “Security in handsets is an area that tends to evolve quite quickly,” he said.

Since development of the platform began, “there are no major new threats, but it’s about evolving approaches and algorithms that address the security situation.”

Although the underlying platform is open, the handsets based on it may not be. The LiMo code includes support for application signing, allowing handset designers or operators to block the execution of unsigned downloads.

“The precise rules used for application signing are usually determined by the operator,” Gillis said.

However, he said, there are signs that operators are moving away from the “walled garden” they favored in the past to a more open approach.
