Google will be Nokia’s competitor in Online Mapping

Nokia-Map

Nokia is taking on the world with the latest addition to their online social website Ovi.com. Nokia revealed an early version of their new Map software on Ovi.com.

The demo is impressive. Unlike most web-based mapping applications, the screen refreshes rapidly, enabling you to pan, tilt, and spin your view of the map while the screen refreshes almost instantaneously. zoomed around a yellow-and-blue map of San Francisco with an aerial abandon that felt like flying over the city, in comparison with Google Maps’ pokey dirigible. Nokia gets that speed by using vector-based maps and doing the redrawing computation on the user’s computer, rather than the servers.

nokias-iphone

Nokia is readying its official response to the iPhone, a project grossly codenamed “Tube” that will feature a touch interface. The new handset, which is said to closely resemble Apple’s device. Was shown during a slideshow at the Evans Data Developer Relations Conference in Redwood City, California. The slide demonstrated the phone’s UI, including a promotional shot featuring Shrek The Third.

Tom Libretto, vice president of Forum Nokia, believes that the company can compete for the iPhone’s marketshare, though the phone-maker hasn’t set a

Nokia N810 Internet Tablet – WiMAX Edition on April 1st

N810

There’s no official announcement yet but Nokia has again too early to be exact as we can probably guess that the new Nokia N810 Internet Tablet – WiMAX Edition will be announced at CTIA at Las Vegas on April 1st.

Eagle eyed itT member and owner of Internet Tablet School, Krisse found the new image and link (that is not yet active) over at the Nokia Tableteer site. Judging from the image, it looks like it’s an N810 copy but in black brushed aluminum, rather than blue. The previously reported BestBuy Nokia ad perhaps shows how the N810 – WiMAX Edition will actually look. No wonder they made a mistake… they’re both “N810’s.”

So be there in CTIA on April 1 (only) to cover what ever Internet Tablet news transpire. Stay tuned.

Nokia Unveiled a Phone Made From Recycled Materials.

Nokia

So Nokiya with a mobile phone concept, which is completely degradable.

The Bamboo was an entry into the Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2008.

The Bamboo’s casing is made of bio-plastic made of renewable natural resources like corn, and Bamboo (hence the name!), which, when harvested, grows back faster than many other plants.

In fact, every aspect of this phone can be returned to nature including the print board, battery, and antenna, which will simply disintegrate if put in compost.

And, in a lovely, green fingered touch, this process will release bamboo seeds that will grow into new plants.

The phone will also feature an energy-efficient monochrome display, and a hand-crack with which to re-charge the device.

Three minutes of winding it up will provide enough power for one phone call

“Morph” A Cool Nanotech Mobile By Nokia

Morph

Morph, a joint Nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) – was launched on 25th alongside the “Design and the Elastic Mind” exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Morph features in both the exhibition catalog and on MoMA’s official website.

Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. It demonstrates the ultimate functionality that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering: flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces. Dr. Bob Iannucci, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia, commented: “Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices; the Morph concept shows what might be possible”.

Dr. Tapani Ryhanen, Head of the NRC Cambridge UK laboratory, Nokia, commented: “We hope that this combination of art and science will showcase the potential of nanoscience to a wider audience.”

Elements of Morph might be available to integrate into handheld devices within 7 years, though initially only at the high-end. However, nanotechnology may one day lead to low cost manufacturing solutions, and offers the possibility of integrating complex functionality at a low price. Hopefully it won’t take that long.

Nokia Struggles With Touch Screen?

Nokia

Nokia is still working on bringing out touch, the company told a disappointed audience at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Apple wasn’t mentioned, but the message was clear–the Mac-maker had an easy time of it developing an iPhone as its first ever telephony product, while the Finnish handset maker has more work to do.

The company also denied a move to Linux following its acquisition of Trolltech, and added pedestrian-focussed GPS to its products.

“We are platformising touch and will bring out touch products this year,” said Niklas Savander, head of software and services at Nokia. He said it was important not to bring out “guinea pig” (other reporters heard “gimmicky”) touch products–and promised a smooth migration path from Nokia’s existing products and the 5000 applications running on mobile phones.

Nokia executives denied the company had any plans for Windows Mobile machines, despite Sony Ericsson announcing support for the Microsoft operating system in a phone announced today.

Nokia’s 6110 Navigator

Nokia

Nokia has just launched its GPS-enabled 6110 Navigator. Did the company hold a boring old press event with handouts to announce the fact? No sirree – what Nokia did was to arrange a kind of treasure hunt through the southern extremity of the great, yet terribly crowded, city of Mumbai!

The 6110 Navigator is an easy-to-use GPS-enabled handset. GPS may be its USP, but it’s also equipped with some pretty decent features. These include a 2 megapixel camera, microSD support, USB v2.0 (mini USB), Bluetooth with A2DP profile, music player, and stereo FM radio.

This 3G-, HSDPA-enabled slider also supports EDGE. A secondary camera located above its 2.2 inch TFT display (240 x 320 pixels, 16M colors) comes in handy for video calls. As for the GPS, maps of eight Indian cities are included, and are really quite detailed.

The device is available off the shelf for around Rs 14,250 with bill and warranty. Expect a detailed review from us soon!
