Ubuntu says the release of 7.04 almost 18 months old, that is on April 19, 2007. As with the earlier releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing security and critical fixes for a period of 18 months. The support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 7.04 will reach end of life on Sunday, October 19th, 2008. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 7.04.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 7.04 is via Ubuntu 7.10. Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found here…

Install KDE 4 on Windows

KDE-win

The preferred way of installing KDE apps under windows is the KDE-Installer. Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista are supported.

The installer is a small piece of software which pulls the required packages from the remote repository and installs them on your Windows machine. It also automatically downloads any packages which are required to satisfy any dependencies which makes it very user friendly. Detailed installation instructions as follows…

* Installer Download it here..
* Download and save the latest version to a directory, e.g. C:\KDE4
* Run the installer, download what you need [see Download needed packages below].
* Add a KDEDIRS environment variable [Start >> Control Panel >> System >> Advanced >> Environment Variables, click [New] User variable and create Variable name KDEDIRS with Variable value the directory where you installed KDE4, e.g. C:\KDE4].
* Add your lib directory and your bin directory to your Windows %PATH%. (Start >> Control Panel >> System >> Advanced >> Environment Variables, double-click the Path System Variable and add “%KDEDIRS%\lib;%KDEDIRS%\bin” to your path separated by semicolon.]
* If you don’t have Visual Studio 2005 installed, download and install the “Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)” [1]
* Try running a Qt application in the bin directory, such as linguist.exe
* If that works, try running a KDE application such as kwrite.exe.

The download for me took a long time since the installer had to pull in over 400 MB of packages. But once all the necessary packages finished downloading, the installer then proceeded to install all the packages in the specified location.

There are a number of applications already such as the KDE games, KWrite, Konqueror, Dolphin file manager and so on and all of them worked on my machine. I have to concede that other than the KDE games which played quite well, most other software is at the least, still buggy. Konqueror and KWrite guzzles up memory like there is no tomorrow. The Konsole (KDE terminal) has yet to be ported to Windows and so you cannot access the terminal from within Konqueror. Dolphin complains that it cannot find the home directory each time I open it in Windows. KWrite is a lot slow in opening up and so on.

Introducing New Ubuntu Mobile

Ubuntu

Ubuntu Linux users already know that their favorite operating system will make the jump from computers to mobile devices, but new details have begun to emerge recently. Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, formally added Ubuntu Mobile to its product page and more fully described its capabilities.

To accommodate for touch screens, Canonical retooled the Ubuntu interface to work with taps and gestures. One press on a button launches an application or menu, while swiping a finger on a Web page pans it, and swiping a video, photo, song or thumbnail page acts as “forward” button.

Ubuntu Mobile, a fully open source project, gives full Internet, with no compromise. Custom options may include licensed codecs and popular third-party applications.

* Full Web 2.0/AJAX fidelity, with custom options of Adobe Flash, Java, and more
* Outstanding media playback so you can enjoy videos, music and photos with superior quality and easy navigation
* A suite of applications that work seamlessly to meet every need of a digital parent, student or anyone who is on-the-go
* Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Dailymotion, 3D games, GPS, maps, in short, the full Web 2.0 experience delivered into your hands as a compact and powerful device that’s easy and fun to use

The product of Canonical collaboration with Intel and the open source community, Ubuntu Mobile is the software that makes it all possible.
[ad#add-top-in]
System requirements for Ubuntu mobile include an Intel Silverthorne processor, 256MB of RAM,and 2GB or more of flash or hard drive space. Although it will eventually see a public release in 2008, right now Canonical is courting manufacturers with pre-release versions of the system for upcoming mobile devices.

Fedora 9 Sulphur Officially Released, Download it here

F9

Fedora 9 Sulphur released and it’s the most breathtaking version of the Fedora operating system. Not only does this release bring support for encrypted filesystems (implemented in the installer), but it’s also one of the best Fedora releases yet!

It’s powered by the latest and greatest Linux kernel, version 2.6.25, Fedora 9 Sulphur brings you ext4 support, a filesystem that’s more scalable and performs much better than ext3. Although it is considered to work better than ext3, it is still under development and not enabled by default, with some features that are not fully completed. Moreover, Fedora 9 doesn’t bring you a fully ext4-compatible version of e2fsprogs, although this utility can create filesystems mountable by ext4.

Download Fedora 9 and enjoy a very nice Linux distribution, right now from here.

I always recommend having an empty hard drive for a Linux installation  and you must have a minimum of 10 GB free space for the Fedora installation.

For this installation, use the Install DVD, because it contains all the software you’ll ever need. However, the DVD edition has about 3 GB in size and, if you don’t have the necessary bandwidth to download it, then we strongly recommend you get one of the KDE or the GNOME Live CD editions. Burn it on a blank disc with your favorite CD/DVD burning application, then insert the disc in the optical drive of the computer on which you want to install Fedora and boot from it. You’ll be presented with a very nice Fedora GRUB splash and some options. At this stage, we simply suggest you press Enter, and wait for the system to load. And follow the screen messages.
[ad#add-top-in]
And, before you reach the Fedora desktop, you must do a one-time general system configuration. That’s it! Now log in to your new Linux operating system and enjoy the breathtaking Fedora 9 Linux distribution!

Ubuntu Linux V-8.04 Avail on April 24

Ubuntu

Ubuntu Linux 8.04 Available as beta versions since March 20, the new Ubuntu 8.04 versions, code-named Hardy Heron, are scheduled, when released on April 24.

The new server and desktop variants of Ubuntu Linux 8.04 will include features aimed at making the open source operating system easier to use and to deploy.

KVM virtualization, which is now integrated with Ubuntu 8.04, allowing easier guest creation and management of virtual machines by administrators.

A first-time Windows installation option called Wubi, which allows users to install Ubuntu 8.04 on a machine like they would install any Windows application, rather than requiring a separate hard drive partition for a full install. This option will allow Windows users to try Ubuntu on a Windows-equipped computer without changing their installed Windows operating system. Ubuntu 8.04 can then be uninstalled like any other Windows application, and users can decide to install it on a separate partition if they want.

* Inkscape 0.46, which brings native PDF support to Ubuntu.
* A world clock applet, which can display the time and weather in multiple locations at once.
* The Brasero CD and DVD burning application, which will complement the CD/DVD burning functions of Nautilus and replace the previously used Serpentine audio CD burning utility.
* A new easier to configure firewall application called ufw.
* Additional memory protection to help defend against rootkits and other malicious code introduced by hackers.

Ubuntu will stop providing updates and support for its 18-month old Ubuntu 6.10 Linux operating system on April 25, the day after the new 8.04 version release. Support and updates will continue for the 7.04 and 7.10 releases, which were released more recently.

Adobe AIR for Linux Freely Available

Adobe AIR

The Linux community of developers can now use proven HTML, Ajax, Adobe Flash and Adobe Flex software, to build rich Internet applications (RIAs) that deploy to desktops across operating systems. RIA developers can extend the reach of their desktop applications on Adobe AIR to Linux users without writing additional platform-specific code, providing access to innovative, branded desktop applications that were previously only available to Mac and Windows users.

An update to the alpha version of Adobe Flex Builder 3 for Linux software is also available on Adobe Labs today, which adds support for creating applications that run on Adobe AIR. The combination of Flex, Adobe AIR and Adobe Flash Player 9 for Linux comprises a well supported, free RIA development platform that enables developers to build, debug and deploy RIAs entirely on Linux, and across browsers and desktops.

The pre-release alpha version of Adobe AIR for Linux is available immediately in English as a free download from Adobe Labs.

The final version of Adobe AIR for Linux is expected later this year and will be available in other languages.

Additionally, the update to Adobe Flex Builder 3 for Linux alpha is freely available in English from Adobe Labs.
