Intel with 4 new desktop chipsets & AMD with 3 new Quad Core AMD Opteron 1300 Series processors

[ad#add-top-in]
AMD today introduced three new Quad-Core AMD Opteron 1300 Series processors for one socket servers and workstations.

AMD

Global tier one OEMs including HP and Dell plan to incorporate the new processors into upcoming platforms, and global supercomputer leader Cray is now shipping Quad-Core AMD Opteron 1300 Series processor-based Cray XT4 systems and upgrading some of the world’s fastest supercomputers to incorporate Quad-Core AMD Opteron 1300 Series processors.

In the same time Intel has four new desktop chipsets to show off from this year’s Computex trade show in Taiwan. The G45 and the G43 focus on HD video playback by way of a new Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD integrated graphics chip. The P45 brings support for faster memory and is the first mainstream Intel-made chipset with two graphics card slots. A scaled-down P43 chipset rounds out the new 4 Series. All of the chipsets use Intel’s familiar LGA 775 processor interface, which means support for Intel’s Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad desktop CPUs. Intel has also added a 1,333MHz front side bus to each chipset, as well as support for DDR3 RAM, as well as DDR2 or DDR3 RAM at speeds up to 1,333MHz.

The new Quad-Core AMD Opteron Models 1352 (2.1GHz), 1354 (2.2GHz), and 1356 (2.3GHz) processors are designed to empower small to mid-market customers to meet growing IT and budgetary demands and increase business productivity. With the enhanced computing capabilities of AMD’s native quad-core architecture in the same socket and thermal requirements as previous AMD Opteron 1000 Series processors, Quad-Core AMD Opteron 1300 Series processors provide small and mid-size customers an energy-efficient yet powerful computing platform that can maximize IT resources and grow with their business demands.

AMD Ships Triple Core Phenom X3 Processors

AMD Tri-Core

AMD has announced the availability of its triple core processors, a first for the PC market. The company also updated the quad-core Phenom lineup by resolving the famous “errata bug” that plagued it earlier this year and has confirmed that the quad-core Opteron chips for servers will be available later in the second quarter.

The AMD Phenom X3 processors delivers significant enhancements in gaming and high-definition experiences for mainstream PC customers. It provides a full HD experience with support for the latest and most demanding formats, including VC-1, MPEG-2 and H.264 on a mainstream PC. With the AMD Unified Video Decoder (UVD), the solution can process HD playback on the better-suited GPU rather than the CPU so consumers may enjoy a smooth HD viewing experience – less lag, stalling and dropped scenes – in the latest Blu-ray titles.

AMD’s ATI Catalyst 8.3 Latest Graphics Driver Release

AMD

AMD, at CeBIT 2008, has announced its latest graphics driver release to advance the Ultimate Visual Experience for PC gaming enthusiasts and casual gamers alike.

Expected to be available for download starting, ATI Catalyst 8.3 is a software update in delivering both CrossFireX for Windows Vista – the world’s first quad-GPU support, and scalable, cost-effective three GPU support – as well as ATI Hybrid Graphics Technology for casual gamers. These multi-GPU capabilities provide gamers a more realistic and immersive experience allowing them to play at high resolutions with demanding image quality settings.

ATI Catalyst 8.3 also introduces ATI Hybrid Graphics support for Windows Vista. The company maintains that up to 70 percent increases in performance are possible in some gaming scenarios based on PCs comprised of an AMD 780G motherboard and ATI Radeon HD 3400 Series graphics product in Windows Vista. ATI Hybrid Graphics also support up to four independent displays through the SurroudView feature.

AMD launches First dual-core Sempron Processors in China

AMD-Sempron

AMD has recently launched the first dual-core Sempron processors in China in a bid to counter Intel’s dual-core Celeron product line in the entry-level market, according to sources at motherboard makers.

AMD Sempron 2100+ processors adopt a 65nm process, and have a core frequency of 1.8GHz. Due to the cheap price and potential of AMD’s own-brand RS780 and 690G IGP chipsets, the CPU has been popular with consumers in China prompting them support AMD’s platform.

In order to hit back, channel vendors predict Intel will drop its dual-core Celeron processor pricing. However, they pointed out that even if the two processors are equal in price, AMD’s strong IGP chipsets still give the company an advantage.

Pricing in the China market is set at RMB 399 (US$55).
