Install OpenOffice 2.4 on Windows Vista

OpenOffice provides everything most people need in an office productivity suite for free. It is stable, reliable, and robust. Unlike its major competitor, it was designed from the start as a single piece of software, which makes for higher quality software and a more consistent user experience. OpenOffice is available on all major computing platforms and is supported in over seventy languages.

The main components of the OpenOffice.org Suite are

– Writer  wordprocessor
– Calc  spreadsheet
– Impress  for presentations

It has a familiar user interface, and is able to read and write the vast majority of legacy file formats (including common Microsoft Office formats). It is supported in over seventy languages, with active support both Communities based (free) and from commercial organizations (paid-for).

Installation:-

Download the OpenOffice 2.4 here…

Run the installer file; the installer extracts the files in an OpenOffice.org 2.x (en-US) Installation Files folder on your desktop, then the installer is launched automatically once the extract is complete. Then the real thing begins and it does install indeed in “\Program files\OpenOffice.org2.x” directory. Note that, it doesn’t create any desktop shortcut to launch the applications. They are in your Start menu once installed. And once it’s ok, just delete the folder on your desktop.

So now done with installation!! Enjoy the power of OpenOffice, Compare to Microsoft Office, Open office is bit faster and also it supports all Microsoft office related stuffs and especially for frees of cost, that’s interesting isn’t it?

Mozilla Thunderbird with Nine Security Vulnerabilities:Fixed

Mozilla patched nine security vulnerabilities in Thunderbird.

Thunderbird 2.0.0.16, which was added to Mozilla’s download servers also quashes nine bugs, including one that was patched in Firefox last week, the company’s open-source browser. The remainder fix flaws that were first addressed in early July when Mozilla updated Firefox to version 2.0.0.15.

Seven of the nine bugs were rated moderate by Mozilla, the second-lowest of the four rankings in its threat system. The other two were low.
[ad#add-top-in]
The bug patched in Thunderbird 23rd Jul that was fixed in Firefox before it was in the browser rendering engine’s CSSValue array data structure. According to Mozilla, the vulnerability could be used by hackers to force a crash, and from there, run malicious code. Several other just-patched Thunderbird vulnerabilities could also be used by attackers to execute code remotely.

Thunderbird 2.x, like its browser sibling, is on the way out. Most of Mozilla’s attention is now on Thunderbird 3.0, which has been available as an Alpha 1 preview for more than two months.

Users can download Thunderbird in versions for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from the Mozilla site, the e-mail client’s built-in updater or wait for the automatic update notification.

contacts.cfg: Defines the people who will receive the alerts in case of a problem.
Here you need to change e-mail ID and Pager ID.

define contact{
contact_name                    Admin
alias                           Administrator Name
service_notification_period     24×7
host_notification_period        24×7
service_notification_options    w,u,c,r

##You can add as many as url’s need like bellow
define host{

}

define host{
host_name  blog.jithonline.com

notification_interval           0
}

define service {
hostgroup_name                 servers
service_description             PING

check_command                 check_smtp
use                             generic-service
notification_interval           0
}

templates.cfg: Defines some templates like the generic url, generic service and a lot of others custom templates.

In the default installation you will find files named generic-host_nagios2.cfg, generic-service_nagios2.cfg and there might be others. Just with copy and paste them into /etc/nagios2/mysite directory it will work OK. Anyway, I prefer to put the definitions on each of them into a single file called templates.cfg, but that’s a personal preference.

timeperiods.cfg: Defines time periods which are valid for checks, notifications, etc.

The default configuration file is OK, so just copy and paste it from /etc/nagios2/conf.d/timeperiods_nagios2.cfg to /etc/nagios2/mysite/timeperiods.cfg.

So we have done with all configuration stuffs.

3)  Restart the Nagios service:

# /etc/init.d/nagios2 restart
If there is any configuration error Nagios will tell you where it is when you attempt to restart the service.

4) Monitor your URLs

By opening Nagios in browser
http://<nagios_server_host>/nagios2
user name:-nagiosadmin
passwd:-<set passwd> Most of the case root passwd itself

If you still having problems, don’t hesitate to post comment.

Snow Leopard New 64-bit Mac OS X with Microsoft Exchange 2007

Snow Leopard

Snow Leopard, the next major version of the world’s most advanced operating system, Mac OS X changes more than its spots, it changes focus. Taking a break from adding new features, Snow Leopard — scheduled to ship in about a year — builds on Leopard’s enormous innovations by delivering a new generation of core software technologies that will streamline Mac OS X, enhance its performance, and set new standards for quality. Snow Leopard dramatically reduces the footprint of Mac OS X, making it even more efficient for users, and giving them back valuable hard drive space for their music and photos.

Special Features:

“Grand Central,” a new set of technologies built into Snow Leopard, brings unrivaled support for multicore systems to Mac OS X. More cores, not faster clock speeds, drive performance increases in today’s processors.
[ad#add-top-in]
Snow Leopard extends the 64-bit technology in Mac OS X to support breakthrough amounts of RAM — up to a theoretical 16TB, or 500 times more than what is possible today.

Snow Leopard includes support for Microsoft Exchange 2007 built into Mail, Address Book, and iCal. Mac OS X uses the Exchange Web Services protocol to provide access to Exchange Server 2007.

Using media technology pioneered in OS X iPhone, Snow Leopard introduces QuickTime X, a streamlined, next-generation platform that advances modern media and Internet standards.

Another powerful Snow Leopard technology, OpenCL (Open Compute Library), makes it possible for developers to efficiently tap the vast gigaflops of computing power currently locked up in the graphics processing unit (GPU). With GPUs approaching processing speeds of a trillion operations per second, they’re capable of considerably more than just drawing pictures. OpenCL takes that power and redirects it for general-purpose computing.

Install KDE 4 on Windows

KDE-win

The preferred way of installing KDE apps under windows is the KDE-Installer. Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista are supported.

The installer is a small piece of software which pulls the required packages from the remote repository and installs them on your Windows machine. It also automatically downloads any packages which are required to satisfy any dependencies which makes it very user friendly. Detailed installation instructions as follows…

* Installer Download it here..
* Download and save the latest version to a directory, e.g. C:\KDE4
* Run the installer, download what you need [see Download needed packages below].
* Add a KDEDIRS environment variable [Start >> Control Panel >> System >> Advanced >> Environment Variables, click [New] User variable and create Variable name KDEDIRS with Variable value the directory where you installed KDE4, e.g. C:\KDE4].
* Add your lib directory and your bin directory to your Windows %PATH%. (Start >> Control Panel >> System >> Advanced >> Environment Variables, double-click the Path System Variable and add “%KDEDIRS%\lib;%KDEDIRS%\bin” to your path separated by semicolon.]
* If you don’t have Visual Studio 2005 installed, download and install the “Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)” [1]
* Try running a Qt application in the bin directory, such as linguist.exe
* If that works, try running a KDE application such as kwrite.exe.

The download for me took a long time since the installer had to pull in over 400 MB of packages. But once all the necessary packages finished downloading, the installer then proceeded to install all the packages in the specified location.
[ad#add-top-in]
There are a number of applications already such as the KDE games, KWrite, Konqueror, Dolphin file manager and so on and all of them worked on my machine. I have to concede that other than the KDE games which played quite well, most other software is at the least, still buggy. Konqueror and KWrite guzzles up memory like there is no tomorrow. The Konsole (KDE terminal) has yet to be ported to Windows and so you cannot access the terminal from within Konqueror. Dolphin complains that it cannot find the home directory each time I open it in Windows. KWrite is a lot slow in opening up and so on.
