Google Updates Mobile Phone OS Android SDK

Android

It’s the Google’s first update since the SDK was released in November and includes changes requested by developers.

Google highlighted a couple of changes in the updated SDK, which was released midweek. It has a new user interface that the search giant said is still a work in progress.

In addition, developers can now support additional file formats in the Android media player. Also, applications can translate an address into a coordinate and the reverse, in location-based programs.

Even though developers said that the first version of the SDK was thin, Android has managed to gain momentum. Four chip makers, including Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, showed off prototypes that support Android this week in Barcelona at the annual Mobile World Congress.

Still, Android faces competition from the established mobile operating systems as well as companies that have rallied behind LiMo, the consortium that is developing an open Linux mobile operating system. At the conference in Barcelona, LiMo announced 18 phones that comply with the operating-system specification that are either on the market already or will be.

Philips 9@9j First AAA-powered cell phone

 Philips

Yes, 9@9j really is the name of Philips’ upcoming mobile phone. It’ll be fun going into Carphone Warehouse asking for that… But the candybar handset does have one innovation – there’s a slot for a AAA battery in the bottom.

“It has a standard lithium ion rechargeable battery, but it has the option to put a AAA battery in, and it’ll give you three hours extra talktime. If your lithium ion battery goes dead, the backup battery kicks in, and starts to charge the lithium ion battery, so you can start using the phone straight away.”

The technology comes from Israeli firm Techtium, and it’s called Backupower. The 9@9j is the first phone to have it inside. Battery firm Energizer is involved too.

Kaspersky launches ‘Mobile Security 7.0’ protection

Kasperky

Kaspersky says their new Mobile Security 7.0 application offers “powerful protection for data stored on smartphones in the event that the device is lost, as well as protecting against network attacks, malware and SMS spam”.

As it is a new product, it’s unsurprising to hear that it features a “series of technical and functional modifications, that have improved the performance of the product, making it more effective and user-friendly”.

According to Kaspersky, key new functions “allow users to completely block a lost device or to remotely delete all the data on it. Moreover, if a smartphone is stolen, the SIM-Watch function prevents the thief from accessing data on the phone without the original SIM card; as soon as the original SIM card is replaced, a message notifies its owner of the new telephone number”.

While a number of Windows Mobile devices do have the ability to have their data wiped, not all Windows Mobile owners are connected to a corporate environment where a system administrator can perform these functions.

This means that Mobile Security 7.0 should give consumers on the latest Windows Mobile and Symbian platforms a way for themselves to ensure their smartphones can be kept secure, which certainly sounds like a very handy feature to have, whether you’re accident prone or not, for even the most careful of people can still have their phone stolen.

 symbian_os

More than 22 million Symbian phones shipped in the fourth quarter of 2007, making a total of 77 million in the year, and bringing in $349 million in royalties for the year

The Symbian operating system grew 50 percent over 2007, and is well placed to grow in future, according to the Symbian chief executive Nigel Clifford – who shrugged off Google Android, Apple iPhone and Microsoft Windows phones at Mobile World Congress.

But Symbian is making its operating system cheaper, in order to reach beyond the smartphone sector to lower-cost phones, which are expected to grow much faster than any other kind of device in the next few years.
