Nokia Unveiled a Phone Made From Recycled Materials.

Nokia

So Nokiya with a mobile phone concept, which is completely degradable.

The Bamboo was an entry into the Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2008.

The Bamboo’s casing is made of bio-plastic made of renewable natural resources like corn, and Bamboo (hence the name!), which, when harvested, grows back faster than many other plants.

In fact, every aspect of this phone can be returned to nature including the print board, battery, and antenna, which will simply disintegrate if put in compost.

And, in a lovely, green fingered touch, this process will release bamboo seeds that will grow into new plants.

The phone will also feature an energy-efficient monochrome display, and a hand-crack with which to re-charge the device.

Three minutes of winding it up will provide enough power for one phone call

New SDK details of iPhone leaked

SDK

According to several sources familiar with Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch software development kit (SDK) plans, the company will use a March 6 event in Cupertino, California to formally announce a number of potentially controversial limitations on application development and publishing, their comments were not for attribution, independently confirming the following details, and offering differing opinions of their importance.

The leaks suggest that the iTunes store will act as a hub very much like it does with podcasts allowing developers a payment metric as well as offering iPod and iPhone applications in one searchable place.

Doing it this way, claim the sites sources, will allow Apple to formally approve or deny all SDK-based software releases for its devices and in our opinion opens up the possibility of a bounty that could be added for listing the applications.

The story also implies that the SDK won’t give developers access to all the hardware on the iPhone and the iPod touch.

According to the report, developers won’t get access to the Dock Connector hence removing any possibility of a hardware based accessory add-on like a GPS module.

Integrated iPhone or iPod touch features such as the phone, Wi-Fi, and camera will be developer-accessible however, although Bluetooth 2.0 is also under consideration for being excluded.

Finally the article cites that the final SDK won’t be released until Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference event in San Francisco.

Apple iPhone SDK On March 6?

SDK

The iPhone software developers kit, promised by Apple CEO Steve Jobs for February, was delayed.

But, according to invites just issued to American technology journalists, Apple may only miss the deadline by a week.

The company are holding an event, an Apple “town hall” meeting, at its headquarters in Cupertino, under the banner “iPhone Software Roadmap” on Thursday, March 6, at 10am PST.

There are also “some exciting new enterprise features” promised, which some speculate could mean the iPhone getting corporate email friendly – an omission currently seen as one of the reasons the smartphone has not broken into the business world.

It’s not clear at this early stage if this means the SDK will be ready next week, or if Apple, sensing unease at their missed deadline, are just having the event as a holding move whilst they rush to get the job done

Apple iPhone 1.1.4 A New Update

Iphone

Apple has released a new update for the iPhone today to version 1.1.4.

The new update, which weighs in at over 160MB does not however seem to include a Software Developers Kit as promised by Apple by the end of February.

In fact reports by users who have installed the software on the mobile phone suggest that no new features have been added with Apple citing “bug fixes” for the update.

However which bugs it fixed, Apple has not clarified.

Those keen to jailbreak the phone so they can install third party applications on it will be pleased to hear that according to Ziphone, its jailbreaking solution for firmware 1.1.3 still works on the new 1.1.4 version.

“Morph” A Cool Nanotech Mobile By Nokia

Morph

Morph, a joint Nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) – was launched on 25th alongside the “Design and the Elastic Mind” exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Morph features in both the exhibition catalog and on MoMA’s official website.

Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. It demonstrates the ultimate functionality that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering: flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces. Dr. Bob Iannucci, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia, commented: “Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices; the Morph concept shows what might be possible”.

Dr. Tapani Ryhanen, Head of the NRC Cambridge UK laboratory, Nokia, commented: “We hope that this combination of art and science will showcase the potential of nanoscience to a wider audience.”

Elements of Morph might be available to integrate into handheld devices within 7 years, though initially only at the high-end. However, nanotechnology may one day lead to low cost manufacturing solutions, and offers the possibility of integrating complex functionality at a low price. Hopefully it won’t take that long.

Gigaset concept phones by Siemens

OLED

Siemens has unveiled some concept phones – the Gigaset “Onyx” and “Helium”. Both phones have received Red-Dot-Design-Awards and support what Siemens says is “innovative, holistic high-tech communication.”

The Onyx concept is designed to support both the social and technical convergence in families and households. Each handset is assigned to a family member who in return is free to personalise the handset in terms of looks and applications using OLED technology.

The Gigaset Helium concept phone offers an integrated 3D-surround loudspeaker and stereo microphones, activated via sliding function, which should mean “revolutionary” speech quality and unprecedented freedom in conversation.

Touchpad sensor keys on the area-wide OLED-display offer plenty of space for intuitive and convenient handling.

Water [H2O] Cell powered Motorola L7 prototype Unveils

Moto

Right around a month ago, we heard that Angstrom Power had managed to stuff some of its sophisticated hydrogen fuel cells into a MOTOSLVR L7. That prototype, Unfortunately we’re no closer to realizing when this stuff will actually escape the proverbial beta stage, and for whatever it’s worth, but the concept is certainly interesting. Imagine, all you’ll need to do is fill up your cellphone with water – and voile, it’ll start working again.

Angstrom has already developed an LED flashlight that runs on a similar concept of a hydrogen fuel cell. The good thing is perhaps we can look forward to a cleaner planet in the not-so-distant future.
