Intel Unveiled Low-Cost Laptops for $300

Intel

Intel Corp. unveiled new low-cost laptops for schools on Wednesday, adding bigger screens and more data storage capacity as the chip maker ratchets up its rivalry with the One Laptop per Child organization, which sells a competing machine.

Intel’s new Classmate PCs – slated to go on sale in April for between $300 and $500 – reflect the company’s growing efforts to sell computers equipped with its own chips to schools in developing countries, a battleground for technology companies because of the millions of people there just coming online.

But the target market has expanded to include kids in the U.S. as potential users of cheaper, stripped-down machines.

Other tweaks to the Classmate that Intel announced Wednesday from its developer forum in Shanghai include the availability of both 7-inch and 9-inch screens, a 30 gigabyte hard disk drive and an integrated Web camera.

At the developer forum, Intel executives also rolled out five new processors under the “Atom” brand name. The chips are designed for pocket-size Internet devices. The chips come in speeds up to 1.86 gigahertz while using less than 3 watts of power.

Intel said its Classmate PCs will eventually use Atom processors.

Classmates are based on Intel’s design and include its processors, but they are built by other manufacturers and sold under a variety of brand names. The first generation went on sale in March 2007 with the 7-inch screen and fewer functions. Intel said it has sold “tens of thousands” of the machines but declined to provide more specific data.

Intel and OLPC have feuded furiously over their competing products.

Intel claimed it couldn’t continue cooperating with OLPC when founder Nicholas Negroponte demanded Intel stop selling Classmates overseas. Negroponte said the dispute stemmed from Intel sales reps disparaging OLPC products while pushing Intel’s own machines.

New Stretchy Circuits. Electronic Brain Will be Coming Soon!!!

Chip-strech

Normally fragile and brittle silicon chips have been made to bend and fold, paving the way for a new generation of flexible electronic devices.

Completely integrated, extremely bendable circuits have been talked about for many years but have not been demonstrated before

The complex devices consist of concertina-like folds of ultra-thin silicon bonded to sheets of rubber.

Writing in the journal Science, the US researchers say the chip’s performance is similar to conventional electronics.

The stretchy circuits could be used to build advanced brain implants, health monitors or smart clothing.

What is SSD or Solid State Disk/Drive?

SSD

A solid-state disk or drive (SSD), also called a flash drive, is the next generation hard disk. Though the architecture of an SSD does not employ disks at all, the name is carried over from standard hard disks. In reality an SSD utilizes a special kind of memory chip with erasable, writeable cells that can hold data even when powered off. It might help to think of an SSD as the larger cousin of the memory stick.

Like standard disks, an SSD utilizes a special area for cache memory. Cache memory serves the function of increasing processing speeds by holding data that is needed repeatedly. With the data close at hand in the cache, it does not need to be fetched from the main storage area each time it’s called.

Some SSDs use cache that is volatile, as in synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM), while others use non-volatile cache. The former requires a power source to retain data, just like computer RAM. The latter type retains data even without power.

An SSD has many advantages over a traditional drive. Seek time is decreased significantly, making the SSD very fast. Being sold-state, the drive has no moving parts to malfunction, and does not generate significant heat. It is also lighter than a standard drive, more power efficient, and completely silent. Finally, the SSD is more durable. If dropped or banged it isn’t as likely to be damaged.

There are, however, disadvantages to an SSD over a standard hard drive. For one, standard drives have become so affordable that SSDs cannot compete except in niche markets. Industry insiders expect SSD prices to remain cost-prohibitive until 2009. The SSD also has a life expectancy of erase/write cycles, after which it no longer performs reliably. A hard disk can deliver a good ten years of solid operation. Finally, an SSD has a significantly slower write time than a standard drive.

Samsung New Q1 Ultra Will Be a Fight For Asus Eee

Q1-Ultart

Samsung has said that it plans to fight the Asus eee “effect” by creating an education friendly version of its UMPC range.

Although the Q1 was first priced around the £2000 mark in the UK on launch, David Smith, IT director for Samsung in the UK has said that an education focused Q1 Ultra will sell for just £399 when it launches in the UK at the end of the month.

The move would mean users will get touch screen windows Vista device for just £100 more than the newly announced 9-inch Asus eee model.

However those looking for the newly announced Q1 Ultra Premium at CES might be disappointed with the spec sheet.

To reach the price point, the new model won’t have the dual camera, and it will also come with a smaller hard drive.

Ceramic iPod speaker “Phonofone”, it uses no power!!!

Phonofone

The Phonofone is an unusual speaker for your iPod not just for its old-fashioned looks, only it uses no power.

LG launches world’s first greatest clarity 10,000:1 monitor

 LG-Li97WH

The L197WH from LG is claimed to be the first monitor to have a 10,000:1 Digital Fine Contrast ratio (DFC).

In fact, says LG, this is the “greatest clarity available on a PC monitor today”.

The 19-inch widescreen monitor is powered by LG’s picture enhancing chipset, the F-Engine.

When set to Movie Mode, a pre-configured setting of the F-Engine, the contrast ratio is automatically increased to 10,000:1.

“Ghosting, blurring and tearing are virtually removed as a result of the monitor’s 2m/s grey-to-grey response time. In addition, the L197WH includes a dual hinge, height adjustment and a tilt design”, adds LG.

Green Cell battery unveiled

 Green Cell

If every portable device used the same batteries, and every battery could be recharged – surely the amount of electronic waste dumped each year would drastically drop.

This is the notion behind the Green Cell concept.

use safe, standardized rechargeable batteries in all portable gadgets. The environment would benefit from fewer batteries being thrown away, and you’d need fewer chargers for all your gear. Green Cell batteries would even be made without toxic chemicals, and sold from vending machines that double as recycling points.

It’s a staggeringly sensible idea, which might be why it earned third place in the Greener Gadgets competition.

The main drawback: persuading manufacturers to configure every gizmo to the size and voltage of standard rechargeable cells. Standardization worked pretty well with the AA battery and USB, though, But will they be able to persuade manufacturers to configure every gizmo to the size and voltage of standard rechargeable cells – I hope so.
