Dell Mini

Dell’s tiny new PC may bring attention back to desktops.

Dell CEO Michael Dell on Tuesday previewed what he called “the company’s smallest and most environmentally-responsible consumer desktop PC.” Dell previewed the desktop as part of Earth Day at the Fortune Brainstorm conference being held in Pasadena, California.

The small form-factor desktop is 81 percent smaller and uses up to 70 percent less energy than a typical desktop mini-tower, said Anne Camden, a Dell spokeswoman.

She declined comment on hardware specifications, brand name or pricing. Details will be released later this year when the desktop is released.

The desktop, which stands on a holder, will come in recycled and recyclable packaging, Camden said.

It will most likely compete with Apple’s Mac Mini and Everex’s MyMiniPC, mini desktops with full computing capabilities designed to save desk space.

Picasa for Linux is actually the Windows version, running through a modified version of Wine. Google contributed to Wine’s development, by contracting with CodeWeavers to improve Wine to run Picasa 2.2 in a proper way. Live Mesh

Earlier this year at Mix 08, Microsoft Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie vaguely referred to the Mesh concept as a way to use the Web through Microsoft products to connect devices, entertainment, businesses and development.

Now Microsoft plans to launch its Live Mesh offering next week at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco but so far is not revealing details of the service.

On Friday night, Microsoft sent out e-mail invitations to a “Mesh it up” event on April 24 featuring demos by Microsoft “experts.” The invitation includes a reference to the mesh.com Web site, which currently requires visitors to sign in with a Windows Live ID and then displays an error message.

Patches for Critical Bugs in Windows ActiveX System Released

Microsoft

Microsoft issued a critical patch for two vulnerabilities in the core graphics subsystem of Windows. One of eight fixes released Tuesday as part of its monthly security updates.

Microsoft released a total of five critical patches in its April security bulletin. Two of them fix bugs in Windows, two fix bugs in Windows and Internet Explorer (IE), and one fixes a vulnerability in Microsoft Office. The critical rating means an attacker could potentially exploit the flaws to hack into a victim’s computer.
The other patches fix vulnerabilities in Windows and Office and were rated “important.” Microsoft releases patches on the second Tuesday of every month, which has become known in the industry as “Patch Tuesday.”

* MS08-018, fixes for vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office

* MS08-021 fixes two vulnerabilities in Windows’ graphics device interface (GDI)

* MS08-022 patches vulnerability in VBScript and JScript scripting engines

* MS08-024 patches a vulnerability found in all versions of IE

* MS08-023 fixes an ActiveX vulnerability that affects both Windows and Internet Explorer.
[ad#add-top-in]
In Sarwate’s opinion, MS08-021, MS08-022 and MS08-023 are especially important for users because they affect all versions of Windows, even if no other software is installed on the machine.

App Engine Google’s New Host Enterprise Web

google_apps

Google offering New host enterprise Web applications on its own infrastructure with a new tool for developers, App Engine.

App Engine will compete with similar services such as Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud and Salesforce’s Appexchange but it may be the cheapest, as Google’s basic services will be free.

Google’s goal is to make it easy to get started with a new web application, and then make it easy to scale when that application reaches the point where it’s receiving significant traffic and has millions of users, Google said in its new App Engine blog.

App Engine is based on technologies Google already uses. It is powered by Bigtable, a distributed storage system currently used by its Google Earth service, and by Google’s own file system GFS.

Only 10,000 developers will be able to sign up initially, but that number will increase.
[ad#add-top-in]
During the preview period, capacity will also be limited. Applications will for example be able to use 500M bytes of storage, and transmit up to 10G bytes of data per day. Google expects most applications will be able to serve around 5 million page views per month within those limits.

Google is keeping mum on how it will price the service, but applications operating within the limitations of the preview release will remain free, even when App Engine goes live.

App Engine will initially only support applications written in Python, but Google is looking to add support for other languages as well.
