Fedora 9 Sulphur Officially Released, Download it here

F9

Fedora 9 Sulphur released and it’s the most breathtaking version of the Fedora operating system. Not only does this release bring support for encrypted filesystems (implemented in the installer), but it’s also one of the best Fedora releases yet!

It’s powered by the latest and greatest Linux kernel, version 2.6.25, Fedora 9 Sulphur brings you ext4 support, a filesystem that’s more scalable and performs much better than ext3. Although it is considered to work better than ext3, it is still under development and not enabled by default, with some features that are not fully completed. Moreover, Fedora 9 doesn’t bring you a fully ext4-compatible version of e2fsprogs, although this utility can create filesystems mountable by ext4.

Download Fedora 9 and enjoy a very nice Linux distribution, right now from here.

I always recommend having an empty hard drive for a Linux installation  and you must have a minimum of 10 GB free space for the Fedora installation.

For this installation, use the Install DVD, because it contains all the software you’ll ever need. However, the DVD edition has about 3 GB in size and, if you don’t have the necessary bandwidth to download it, then we strongly recommend you get one of the KDE or the GNOME Live CD editions. Burn it on a blank disc with your favorite CD/DVD burning application, then insert the disc in the optical drive of the computer on which you want to install Fedora and boot from it. You’ll be presented with a very nice Fedora GRUB splash and some options. At this stage, we simply suggest you press Enter, and wait for the system to load. And follow the screen messages.

And, before you reach the Fedora desktop, you must do a one-time general system configuration. That’s it! Now log in to your new Linux operating system and enjoy the breathtaking Fedora 9 Linux distribution!

New Silver-zinc Battery provides longer Battery Life for Laptops & Mobiles

Battery

Silver-zinc batteries pack more energy than lithium-ion batteries, giving laptops 40 percent more run time, according to Dueber. If a laptop runs for two hours with a lithium-ion battery, it should run for closer to three hours with a silver-zinc battery.

The batteries will be available in consumer and business laptops from major PC makers starting in August, according to Ross Dueber, the CEO of ZPower, although he declined to name any of the vendors on Thursday.

The battery’s water-based chemistry also makes it nonflammable, compared to lithium-ion, which uses dimethyl carbonate, a flammable liquid. Cells can go off “like firecrackers” in lithium-ion batteries.

It also remains to be seen if silver-zinc batteries can compete on price, since lithium-ion is relatively cheap. The silver-zinc batteries contain silver, which can be expensive.

Adobe announced New Open Screen Flash on Mobile phones etc

Adob-Mob

Adobe Systems today announced a plan to try to get its Flash player installed on more mobile devices and set-top boxes. Adobe will stop charging licensing fees for mobile versions of Flash and plans to publish information about the inner workings of the code.

Adobe said it was working with Arm, SonyEricsson, Nokia, LG and other gadget makers on the Open Screen initiative as well as content partners such as the BBC, MTV and NBC.

The Open Screen plan will build on Flash Lite – Adobe’s version of its multimedia player designed for mobile gadgets – that is already on millions of handsets.

The ultimate aim of Open Screen is to make it much easier for TV and film makers to send their content to mobiles and on other devices such as set-top boxes.

It aims to do this by creating one flexible player technology that can run on any small-form device but only demands that developers write code once for it.

At the moment trying to get games or video on to different devices can be frustrating because of the plethora of hardware and software quirks on each gadget.
[ad#add-top-in]
Adobe’s four-step plan involves ending license fees; removing restrictions on the use of files in SWF and FLV format; publishing detailed information about the program interfaces for its Flash player and opening up information about its Flash streaming technology.

The move is the latest in a series that are aiming to open up Flash and get more developers working with it.

It is also part of the larger plan for Adobe Air – an overarching code development system that aims to bridge the gap between web and desktop applications.

Microsoft Releases New Version of Expression Studio Tools

Expression

Microsoft unveiled new version of its Expression Studio 2 tool set for Web and multimedia designers that includes the first native support for its Silverlight technology across all of the products in the suite.

In a sense, this is the first full release of Expression, as Silverlight is a key component of Microsoft’s design strategy and overall plan to compete with Adobe’s Creative Suite and its Flash technology. Expression Studio has only been in the market about a year,

Expression Studio 2 includes five products
1) Expression Web for Web design
2) Expression Blend for multimedia and 3D design
3) Expression Design for graphic design
4) Expression Media for storing and sharing multimedia assets
5) Expression Encoder for video encoding.

The new release marks the first time Encoder is in the suite as a full-fledged product, said Wayne Smith, Microsoft group product manager for Expression Studio.

In the new release, all of the products now have support for Silverlight, Microsoft’s multimedia runtime for running live and streaming video on the Web. Previously, only Expression Web had support for Silverlight, but it was very limited.

It also should be available by mid-month in retailers such as Best Buy with an estimated retail price of $699. To encourage Adobe users to switch to Expression, Microsoft also is offering upgrade deals; information is available on the Web site.

Expression Blend 2 is available for $499
Expression Web 2 is available for $299

Next-gen iPhone with Haptic Technology?

Next-Iphone

It seems Apple Inc is in talks with Immersion Corporation to licence for its next-gen iPhone Haptic Technology for its iPhone. if recent internet reports are to be believed. Also Immersion Corporation on Thursday announced that they have appointed former Apple executive Clent Richardson to the position of President and CEO.

Palluxo.com reports: “A source (Apple Inc employee), who chose to remain anonymous, told us that senior executives of the two companies have already met once on Tuesday and the next meeting has been scheduled for Friday morning. The source confirmed that the executives will continue discussions over licencing and implementation issues of iPhone haptics”.

The haptic technology would mean that when users pressed one of the iPhone’s touchscreen icons, or for example a letter in keypad mode, they would get a tiny, vibrating response as feedback that makes the experience feel more “real”.
[ad#add-top-in]
Immersion’s haptic technology for phones is called VibeTonz and is already used in some mobiles. Nokia currently licences the technology and is said to be planning to use it in their touchscreen “Tube” iPhone competitor.
