YouTube Offering HD-Videos Too

Youtube-HD

Video sharing kings YouTube are in the process of whipping up the quality of their video stream, with users increasingly being given the option to view some YouTube videos as high quality streams.

On the YouTube Account page, users can now select three options;

* Choosing video quality dynamically based on the current Internet connection.
* Never play higher-quality video if you have a slow connection.
* Always play higher-quality video when it’s available – if you have a fast connection.

The streams are available on certain videos, based upon the source file uploaded, and more are promised over time.

This better quality streaming applies to all eligible videos uploaded from the YouTube community, and is not restricted to partner content.

But YouTube suggests that only folk with a fast internet connection opt for the higher rates.

The YouTube blog states: “Our philosophy is to make sure that as many people as possible can access YouTube and that videos start quickly and play smoothly.”

“That’s one reason why you don’t see us racing to call this ‘Super Duper YouTube HD’ because most people don’t want to wait a long time for videos to play.”

Although the Q1 was first priced around the £2000 mark in the UK on launch, David Smith, IT director for Samsung in the UK has said that an education focused Q1 Ultra will sell for just £399 when it launches in the UK at the end of the month.

The move would mean users will get touch screen windows Vista device for just £100 more than the newly announced 9-inch Asus eee model.

However those looking for the newly announced Q1 Ultra Premium at CES might be disappointed with the spec sheet.

To reach the price point, the new model won’t have the dual camera, and it will also come with a smaller hard drive.

Apple’s Beatles Rumours May Come True Soon

 Apple

The Beatles would go digital with their back catalogue in 2008. Cue a whole host of rumors, and, on Monday, his promise seemed to have come true with the story that the remaining Beatles had done a $400 million deal with Apple to put their entire back catalogue on iTunes.

But the very next day, one of the companies that owns the rights to a vast majority of the back catalogue denied the reports.

Sony/ATV Music Publishing, the joint venture owned by Sony and Michael Jackson, branded them “untrue”, adding that if a deal had been made, they would know about it.

And today, it’s Apple that has stepped up to deny the claims.

The computing giant has told Reuters that the story is “unsubstantiated speculation”, and added: “This is not news nor is it a scoop”.

The new Need for Speed game

EA game

At EA’s “Meet the Makers” event held in Singapore yesterday John Doyle from EA’s Black Box studios, Vancouver, Canada had talk with Tech2 fellow.

When asked about the new Need for Speed game (pardon the horrible Photoshop job); EA would be making a formal announcement in the next 3-4 months hinting at the fact that they may go back to the whole Most Wanted-ish sandbox style of gameplay (finally!)

Also expect a brand new game mechanic since Doyle claims that every NFS game out there brings something new to the table. Underground had the whole tuner scene happening, Most Wanted was just plain awesome, Carbon had Autoscultping and Canyon Duel. Doyle says
(a) it was very well received; and (b) there’s no way in hell EA’s letting a successful game get away that easily.

So yeah, I’m guessing we can expect a “formal announcement” in the near future.

Silverlight be the next Microsoft technology to work on the iPhone?

Silverlight

Could Silverlight be the next Microsoft technology to work on the iPhone? Don’t bet on it anytime soon, said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Speaking in Las Vegas at the MIX 08 conference on Thursday, Ballmer said Microsoft wants to get its Silverlight technology, which allows developers to build and deliver multimedia applications on the Web, “everywhere,” and that putting it on the iPhone is certainly “interesting.”

“I can’t say there has been extensive discussion” with Apple CEO Steve Jobs about it, Ballmer said.

He said he was concerned about Apple’s plan, unveiled Thursday, to let developers sell applications for the iPhone on iTunes and take a 30 percent cut of revenues. Ballmer suggested that Apple might charge Microsoft similarly to get Silverlight on the iPhone, though there is so far no evidence to support this belief.

And compatibility with other portable players is mooted – a BBC developer said that the corporation was currently working on other versions of the iPlayer for “many more” devices.
